Board of Governors

Stan Janssen

I started in CGA in 1996. The following season I became a Judge. When the family went to State Show that year, I earned my Judges buckle. I also became involved in show management at the local level by serving on the board of the Riverside Ranglers in Norco. I worked with them for 2 years. We also rode RCMM during that time. I took over as President of RCMM after the 1998 show season. At the time there were several things that confused me about the CGA State organization, so I got involved in helping some folks rewrite the CGA Bylaws. As a result of that involvement I was appointed to the CGA Board of Directors. The following year I was nominated for CGA Vice-President. I served in that capacity for 4 years.

Keeping CGA a safe,
fun
family
As I am getting older now all the dates fog together, but somewhere in that time I also decided that I had some problems with some of the rules and that whole process. As a result I decided I wanted to become a Master Judge. I found out what the criteria was and started down the path of making sure I worked through all of the qualifications. When an opening presented itself I was all over it! Also during that time some one "goat roped" me into working as Assistant Arena Manager for CGA State Championship Show. I did that for a couple of years and then served as Arena Manager for the first time about 3 or 4 tears ago. Last year I was asked by the Board of Governors to be State Show Manager for 2005. As I have a hard time saying no, I accepted. In 2005 I was elected to the Board of Governors by the Board of Directors.

Over the past ten years I have worked on several projects related to the CGA Bylaws and Rule issues and have served the organization in several capacities. My expectations for change were pretty high when I first started becoming involved in the governing body within CGA. What I found out was that change is slow and that to change something like the thinking within CGA you must first become a part what you are trying to change. I have come to understand why some of my initial thoughts really didn't make sense. Members frequently relate concerns to me. Sometimes I agree and sometimes I don't. In all cases I have tried to encourage folks to get involved and take their ideas and concerns to the meetings where such things get changed whether that is at a local or State level.

CGA has been fun and I have met many new friends. I have enjoyed almost every minute of it. Sunny and the kids like it although as they get older their participation has slowed way down with work, school and the like. My term on the Board of Governors is a five year term. Being a Master Judge has no limit just like any other Judge; as long as you remain active you retain the status. All that being said, I guess I'll be around a while longer. Who knows I might be a "lifer".

Thanks for the friendship, good times and support,
Stan
